Message From the President

It's the time of year that our minds turn to those things we are most thankful for. And this year, the Foundation has a long list of things we are grateful for.

We are blessed to have such generous friends and neighbors who support Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert with their selfless gifts of time and finances.

Friends such as Julia and Tom Marreel who established the Excellence in Service program that allows us to recognize those who go above and beyond to make our hospitals the best they can be.

And friends like the Lund family for their ongoing support of Mercy Gilbert Medical Center's Family Birth Center and for the lives they save through their efforts towards harvesting cord blood.

We truly are grateful for everyone who supports us in countless ways. We thank you all for a wonderful 2011 and look forward to an even better 2012.

Chandler Regional One of Four Arizona Hospitals on Joint Commission List of Top Hospitals

We are proud to share that Chandler Regional Medical Center was recently recognized by The Joint Commission in its annual report on quality and safety, Improving America's Hospitals.

For the first time, the report lists hospitals and critical access hospitals that are top performers in using evidence-based care processes closely linked to positive patient outcomes. The 405 organizations identified as attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for the full previous year (2010) represent approximately 14 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals that report core measure performance data.

About CHW Foundation - East Valley

Mission

Based on performance related to 22 accountability measures for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical and children's asthma care, The Joint Commission report singles out hospitals in 45 states. Only four Arizona hospitals were included on the list, and Chandler Regional Medical Center was recognized as a top performer for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.

Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation Provides Funding for New Stroke Therapy Equipment at Mercy Gilbert

Thanks to the generous support of the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation in the form of a $500,000 grant, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center was able to purchase and install the Secure Track patient support system and the Fiber-optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) station. Now certified as a Primary Stroke Center, Mercy Gilbert is a facility that demonstrates exceptional effort in treating and improving long-term outcomes for stroke patients. Stroke affects an estimated 700,000 people annually, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in adults. Incidences of stroke are increasing in our area, and our doctors and nurses use equipment such as the Secure Track and FEES station to provide stroke patients with the best standard of care.

Mercy Gilbert Medical Center is the first hospital in the East Valley to provide patients undergoing joint surgery or stroke therapy with the Secure Track post surgical mechanical rehabilitation system.

Close of 2011 Looks Toward the Future

With the holiday season upon us, nothing could be more appropriate than starting off with the spirit of giving thanks. With the generous support of our community members like you, who contribute to CHW Foundation - East Valley, we are able to continue with our commitment to caring for our community.

St. Francis of Assisi said, "For it is in giving that we receive." This is one of the many reasons why giving provides the opportunity for so many benefits such as the feeling of doing good, knowing we are contributing to a cause, and reminding ourselves of the many blessings in our life. And let's not forget, donating your hard earned money allows you to take a tax deduction for doing something nice!

With just five weeks left in 2011, making a gift to CHW Foundation now will help us in the future. We have made it easy to make a gift by visiting supportchweastvalley.org and selecting "Donate Online."

Thank you again for investing in Chandler Regional Medical Center and Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. We truly appreciate your generosity. We hope you enjoy the many blessings of the holiday season.

8th Annual Laughter a Sidesplitting Success

The 8th annual Laughter is the Best Medicine event was held Oct. 22 at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass with more than 500 people in attendance. The black-tie gala to benefit Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers raised over $300,000 thanks to the work of staff, 30-plus volunteers and an amazing group of donors.

The event was emceed by Bob Stromberg and Rob Pearson entertained the crowd. Another successful live auction was hosted by Mark Lewis.

Diane Abraham, the new president and CEO of the East Valley Foundation, was present and expressed her gratitude for all in attendance. She noted what an honor it is to raise funds supporting two amazing hospitals, which were both recently singled-out with prestigious awards for quality.

The Foundation thanks the major event sponsors CHW East Valley – Volunteers, Clin-Path Associates, Southwest Ambulance, Mercy Care Plan and Ocotillo Golf Resort and our hosts the Gila River Indian Community and the Sheraton. Special thanks to Michelle Angle, the event chair; Julia Marreel, the auction chair; and Reba Boyd, the decorations chair – who put together a lovely evening for everyone.

2011 Marreel Excellence in Service Award Recipients

The CHW Foundation – East Valley recognizes caregivers at Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers who make it their daily priority to provide stellar service to the hospitals' patients by honoring 12 individual recipients with the 2011 Marreel Excellence in Service Awards that were presented at the Laughter gala.

The annual awards program is named for East Valley residents Tom and Julia Marreel who are long-time supporters of the CHW Foundation – East Valley, which promotes philanthropic support for Catholic Healthcare West's (CHW) two area hospitals. Each year the Marreel Excellence in Service Awards recipients are selected from a list of physicians, clinicians and non-clinicians who were recognized for imparting exceptional care during the past year by patients, family of patients, and staff.

Congratulations to our New Guardian Angels

Congratulations to our most recently pinned Guardian Angels, recognized by patients and their families for providing exceptional service and care.

The CHW Foundation-East Valley designed the Guardian Angel Program to provide a venue for patients and their families to express thanks for outstanding compassionate care they received at Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers.

Through the program, patients can name a special caregiver, and have the opportunity to provide a donation in honor of that caregiver. Since the program's inception in 2008, more than 200 people have been honored.

This fall more than 80 physicians, clinicians and volunteers, plus several teams, were thanked via the 55 nominations received since the last pinning ceremony last March. These Guardian Angels, who provided above-and-beyond service to our patients and their families, were recognized by the leadership team during morning ceremonies at both hospitals.
